Il monumento è un omaggio allo scrittore che a Roma soggiornò per la prima volta, sotto falso nome, nel novembre 1786. Heberlein (1847-1926) lo ritrae a figura intera in abiti d’epoca, e dunque per nulla idealizzato, e lascia al basamento la celebrazione delle maggiori opere del letterato tedesco, di cui il gruppo più incisivo è senza dubbio la personificazione del Faust collocato sul retro.
The monument is an homage to Goethe who comes to Rome, for the first time and under a false name, in November 1786. Heberlein (1847-1926) modeled an entire figure portrait, in modern dresses, and he kept any idealizations for the basement which is possible to recognize the personification of his major works: sure the most impressive is the Faust of the back.
