Friedrich William von Schadow (1788-1862) artista prima neoclassico e poi nazareno, scompare a Düsseldorf nel 1862 dove sette anni più tardi ne viene svelato il monumento che porta la firma di August Friedrich Wittig (1826-1893).
Wittig segue i corsi di Ernst Rietscheld all’Accademia di Dresda per poi consolidare la propria preparazione prima a Firenze (1849) e poi a Roma (1850) dove rimane sino al 1863. Nel 1864 accetta la cattedra di scultura dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Düsseldorf e dopo 5 anni ritrae Shadow in un’erma imponente – volutamente posta tanto in alto – e classica. Lo scultore si limita a modellarne il busto e senza abiti così da eternare il soggetto.
Friedrich William von Schadow (1788-1862) was before a Neoclassical artist and then a Nazareno one, he died in Düsseldorf in 1862 where after seven years the town dedicates to him a monument by August Friedrich Wittig (1826-1893).
Wittig is a pupil of Ernst Rietscheld at the Dresden’s Academy and he consolidates his knowledge in Florence (1849) and Rome (1850) where he stays till 1863. In 1864 he accepts the sculpture chair in the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts and after five years he unveils the Shadow’s erma, overshadoving - in his tall position - and classic. The sculptor models only the bust, without dresses in the way to make it eternal.
