Monumento a Dante Alighieri – Cesare Zocchi

L’11 ottobre 1896 viene inaugurato a Trento il monumento a Dante di Cesare Zocchi (1875-1922) che ebbe la meglio in un decennale concorso di ampia partecipazione nazionale e di cui il blog pubblica alcuni bozzetti (Marsili, Malfatti, Bazzarro, Ximenes). Il gruppo si sviluppa su tre ordini: in cima il ritratto a figura intera del sommo poeta, nel girone sottostante i dannati, vestiti di stracci, scarni e disperati. Va segnalata la figura del guardiano che riprende la posa de Le Penseur di Rodin; mentre l’incontro tra Dante, Virgilio e  Sordello che gli si rivolge con, «O Mantovano, io son Sordello della tua terra» diviene manifesto dell’irredentismo trentino.
Il Dante, promosso in primis da Guglielmo Ranzi, ha infatti un forte valore patriottico nella Trento irredentista di fine ‘800 e non a caso il monumento è rivolto verso l’Austria.

The Dante’s monument by Cesare Zocchi (1875-1922) has been inaugurated on the 11 October 1896 in Trento; the sculptor was the winner of a ten-year concourse that had a large national participation and the blog is publishing some models (Marsili, Malfatti, Bazzarro, Ximenes). The group has organized on three levels: on the top stands the entire figure of the great poet, in the circle below there are the damned aims, dressed by cloths, gaunt and hopeless. The figure of the guardian retrieves the Penseur’s position by A. Rodin; while on the left the meeting between Dante, Virgilio and Sordello who directs them as «O Mantovano, I’m Sordello from your land» becomes the Irredentism manifest of the Trentino.
Dante, promoted forthwith by G. Ranzi, has a strong patriotic value in the Trento of the end of XIX century and it was oriented exactly  in the Austria direction.
