Il quadruplo ritratto - Matthew Barney / Barry X Ball -, impeccabilmente sostenuto da cavi d’acciaio è parte di una riflessione che impegna l’artista statunitense fin dal 2000. Negli spazi puliti della galleria parigina di Nathalie Obadia, la scrupolosa lavorazione del marmo risulta forse ancora più leggibile che nel confronto con gli spazi barocchi di Ca’ Rezzonico, dove Barry X Ball ha esposto a latere della Biennale del 2011. L’artista distorce le forme in senso grottesco attraverso le regole virtuosistiche della scultura stessa; sceglie di lavorare pietre primigenie, “perché sono materiali déclassé […] dalla storia gloriosa, capaci di resistere a ogni sforzo di controllo, perché è l’eterno contrasto tra la natura e il mezzo tecnico, ed è coraggioso creare qualcosa più bello del suo stato naturale”. The quadruple portrait - Matthew Barney / Barry X Ball -, perfectly hanged at the ceiling, is a 11 years long reflection in the career of the artist. In the white spaces of the Nathalie Obadia gallery in Paris, the attentive elaboration of the marble is still more effective than in the dialogue with the baroque spaces of Palazzo Rezzonico, where Barry x Ball has an exhibition in the occasion of the last Biennale. The artist manipulates forms in a grotesque way by the most traditional and virtuosistic rules of the sculpture. He choses primarily stone, “because it’s a déclassé material […] because of its glorious history as a sculpture material, because it resists my every effort to control it, because its timeless nature contrasts with the of-the-moment high-tech means I utilize to shape it, because it is a challenge to make something of it more beautiful than it is in its natural state”.
