Il
monumento a Kamehameha I, si deve all’artista statunitense Thomas
Ridgeway Gould (1818-1881), che lo fuse nel 1880 e lo svelò tre anni
più tardi di fronte al vecchio tribunale di Honolulu. Il bronzo è stato ingenuamente
patinato di modo da avvicinarsi alle tinte originali di Kamehameha I,
protagonista dell’epopea locale.
Ridgeway Gould, originario di Boston,
ebbe una formazione fiorentina evidente nel classicismo del gesto; nella sua
carriera inoltre dimostrò una propensione per i soggetti esotici.

The statue of Kamehameha I (original cast)
is an outdoor
sculpture by American artist Thomas
Ridgeway Gould (1818-1881), cast in 1880 and installed three years
later in front of the old country courthouse in Honolulu (Hawaii). Made of cast
brass and painted with
lifelike colors, it depicts Kamehameha I,
and represents an important cultural and spiritual object for the local
community.
Ridgeway Gould, born in Boston has a Florentine
formation that appears in the classical gesture of the hero.
