Monumento a Giotto – Giovanni Dupré

Nel 1842 il monumento a colui che riportò «i modi delle buone pitture» nell’arte italiana è affidato allo scultore senese Giovanni Dupré (1817-1882) che ne espone il modello in gesso nel 1844 per inaugurarlo l’anno seguente assieme al Petrarca e al Cellini. Giotto è per lo scultore l’occasione di riscattarsi dalle accuse di aver utilizzato un calco dal vivo per la realizzazione dell’Abele; egli infatti prosegue la sua ricerca del vero evidente nell’espressione del volto e soprattutto nella mano sinistra che trattiene la cintola.

In 1842 the monument dedicated to who carried back «the mode of the good painting» in the Italian art has been entrusted to the Siena sculptor Giovanni Dupré (1817-1882) who exposed the plaster model in 1844 in the way to unveil it the next year with the Petrarca and the Cellini. Giotto is for the artist the occasion to remove the accusations to have used an alive modeling for his Abele; in fact he continues on his research on the true that it’s evident in the face expression and above all in the left hand that is keeping the belt.
