L’omaggio – tardo - che Biella erige a Garibaldi è da un lato al quanto anomalo poiché non rispetta l’iconografia più classica dell’eroe, quasi infrange la regola dell’immediata riconoscibilità, ma dall’altra abbraccia la poetica del Canonica più maturo che presta attenzione alla modellazione delle mani – in questo caso molto vicine al Selvatico di Venezia - e che si sente libero da ogni convenzione.
The homage – quite late – that Biella dedicated to Garibaldi is by one side almost anomalous because it does not respect the classic iconography of the hero, it’s breaking the rule of the recognizable, but on the other side it’s showing the most mature Canonica’s issues, when he was really careful with the modelling of the hands – in this case quite similar to the Selvatico’s bust in Venice – and he was totally free from every convention.
