Il
monumento celebra il manipolo di soldati del Centosettesimo reggimento
newyorchese che, al termine del conflitto mondiale, nel novembre del 1918,
fecero ritorno dall’Europa e rientrarono nella Guardia Nazionale dello Stato di
New York. Il monumento, commissionato nel 1920, venne realizzato tra il 1926 e
il ‘27 da Karl Illava, scultore che partecipò in prima persona alla battaglia,
ragione probabile dell’insistenza sui dettagli d’intenso realismo.
The monument is dedicated to the soldiers of
the 107th Regiment of New York who, at the end of the First World War, in the
November 1918, came back from Europe and entered in the New York National
Guard. The memorial has been committed in 1920, but it has been realized
between 1926 and 1927 by Karl Illava, sculptor who took part in first person to
the conflict; that’s probably one of the reason of the vivid realism of some
details.
