L’installazione di Susan
Philipsz alla Tate Britain è elegante nell’allestimento e toccante nei
contenuti. War damaged musical
instruments propone quattordici registrazioni di strumenti musicali, britannici
e tedeschi, danneggiati nei conflitti degli ultimi 200 anni. Le note registrate
si basano sulle note del segnale militare The
last post, ma il motivo è frammentato in un’estensione tale da renderlo
quasi irriconoscibile. Il motivo ricordava ai soldati perduti o feriti che il
rientro alla base era sicuro ed è oggi ancora impiegato quale congedo nei
funerali militari e nelle commemorazioni.

The installation by Susan Philipsz is elegant and touching. War damaged musical instruments features
fourteen recording of British and German brass and wind instruments damaged in
conflicts over the last 200 years. The notes recorded are based on the tones of
the military bugle call The last post,
but the tune is fragmented to such an extent that it is almost unrecognisable.
The tune signalled to lost and wounded soldiers that it was safe to return to
base and is used today as a final farewell in military funerals and Remembrance
ceremonies.
